AS PROMISED - Pumpkin Kongs!

Ok, this isn't a recipie, it's just a how to. It's easy, but time consuming, and will stain, if precautions aren't taken, BUT these keep my dogs busy FOUR TIMES longer than anything else i can stuff in their kongs, so i endure.

What you need: 1. can of pumpkin. I have a giagantic one because i can! (no pun intended) this can makes enough to fill 12 kongs. The 30oz can fills 3-4 kongs. 2. apron 3. 2 metal bowls (plastic will stain!) 4. metal strainer 5. tea towel that does not have any tears or weak spots 6. kongs
Photobucket

Start by putting on your apron. Trust me this process is messy and will stain!!! Then open the can. Make sure it's fully charged as my Gizmo died halfway thru.
Photobucket

Tada!
Photobucket

Put the strainer over/in one of the bowls. The strainer will prevent any large chunks falling into the pumpkin juice. Start with small amounts of pumpkin in the tea towel until you get used to the motion that removes the most water.
Photobucket

Twist the towel up around the pumpkin.
Photobucket

Squeeeeeeze! I've found that flattening the pumpkin out and wringing it against itself works well to remove water. half the battle is getting the water off the towel and into the bowel!
Photobucket

Once you've removed most of the water you will be left with what looks like baby poop in a diaper. Was that TMI? sorry...
Photobucket

Um.. you'll be left with what looks like deep orange playdough. better? IT doesn't have to be completely dry, but dry enough that it's not going to leak out the bottom of the kongs.
Photobucket

You'll be amazed how much water you will get out of just one scoop of pumpkin
Photobucket

After half my my giant can my arms started to get shaky so i stopped.
Photobucket

This will be just enough pumpkin to fill 6 kongs.
Photobucket

begin the stuffing process. make sure you pack the kong starting at the bottom as it's hard to remove air bubbles once it's full.
Photobucket

These are ready to go into the freezer. They need to set up for at least 4-5 hours.
Photobucket

Store the remaining pumpkin in the fridge. this will keep long enough for me to finish squeezing next week. Don't throw the juice away! My dogs will get it in their dinner tonight. they love it. 2 2/3 cups of juice from 1/2 of the pumpkin... wow!
Photobucket

couple things to note. I'm not kidding about staining! Check out my nails and the dog's beds:
Photobucket

Photobucket

they now only get these in empty crates!!
Photobucket

Pumpkin is a great stool regulator. It helps prevent constipation and diarrhea. Don't feed too much or it can CAUSE diarrhea. my dogs will get the juice tonight, a kong tomorrow, and another kong on monday. If you have problems with your dog having diarrhea a lot add 1 tablespoon to 1/4 cup of pumpkin to their food daily, depending on their size. Enjoy!!

Video!

Ok, I know i promised (via twitter) a kong treat today. BUT we are totally out of fridge room, and since i only have a GINORMOUS #10 can of pumpkin (I used the last small can yesterday testing my technique). However, expect it soon! Besides, i shouldn't give the boys that much fiber twice in one week, i'm trying to cure the runs, not cause it! (did you know that pumpkin can cure diarrhea AND constipation and too much can CAUSE diarrhea?! Weird huh?)

Well, anyway. I'm getting back on a training schedule with the boys, here's a video of the Monster trying to learn 4-in-a-box which is just placing all four feet in a box. I'm clicking for him putting his BACK feet in the box, as he's mostly forgotten he has them.

I also have a vid of Shiner box-hopping, but i can't edit it as it's a .mov file, and i can't edit .mov files and it's too long to upload to photobucket. Anyone know of a FREE .MOV EDITOR?! He's so cute hopping into boxes, but i can't share it! *pout*

What's going on 'round here

hi everyone! It's been a busy week here. Unfortunately none of it involved pictures, which is why there have not been any updates.

It rained most of last week (and is gearing up right now to rain any second) so the boys were cooped up inside a lot. Thursday and Friday were warm and sunny and dried out the ground a smidge. Friday we went out to play, and while hosing the mud off the boys Trophy discovered that hoses are VERY VERY AWESOME. He loves to chase the water hitting the ground, even more than the red dot as there's something tangible he can actually get his mouth on. He also discovered that butterfiles are fun to chase.
Yesterday was downright HOT - nearly eighty in the sun according to the thermometer. I got sun burnt while washing my car, but Trophy had a blast still chasing the hose, even trying to kill it running on my car. lol!

Yesterday I also bought the little brat a new toy. I will be giving my review on it in a few weeks when we've had a chance to try it out more. I hope this will be THE PREFECT TOY as it come WITH A GUARANTEE! If Trophy destroys it, i get a NEW ONE. *evil laughter*. ahem, sorry. don't know what came over me. :)

It's good to come home.

I hate going to work. BUT, I love coming home afterward. Not only does it mean i can finally take my shoes off and sit down, but it also means this:
Photobucket
How can you not love that face??

Unfortunatly Trophy usually looks something like this:
Photobucket
(I still haven't be able to fully capture his big toothy grin, but i WILL SOME DAY!)

But one dorky pup aside how could anyone NOT want to come home to three (or 4, or 8 or 12. Err. ok just 4. My limit is 4.) of these happy faces?
Photobucket

I love these boys.

Nibbles Treats - review

*warning this post is picture heavy! Enjoy! :)

Today the boys got a big surprise! A package arrived for them in the mail!
Photobucket

Unfortunatly it looked like the mail lady thought the package would taste yummy and tried to take a bite of of the packaging. Or maybe Trophy took a chunk out before i got home... hard to tell. And check out Q, would you? He's sassing me. (He's feeling much better today if you couldn't tell)
Photobucket

uh... mawm? can you stop gabbing and get to the treat opening.
Photobucket

Sass I tell you. Well, my goodness. Three goodies to try from our new friends over at "You Had Me At Arf!" Aren't you boys spoiled? Turns out the dogs over there are lucky enough to have their very own dog treat company! And you can check out their online store here: http://nibblestreats.com/.

Let's check out the goodies. First up are WHO SHOT JR'S. Made with unbleached white flour, wheat germ, all natural peanut butter (no salt or sugar added), egg, vegetable oil & carob chips. Sounds like the puppy version of a Reeses-cookie. yum.
Photobucket

They're even shaped like bullets! Don't they look delish?
Photobucket

What do you think Qwill?
Photobucket

*Schlurrp*
Photobucket

Just the treats, not my fingers please!
Photobucket

mumphsorrymumble. *crunch crunch munch*
Photobucket

Mmmm thish is delectable
Photobucket

Mmmm chooooocolate
Photobucket

It's actually Carob Trophy.
who cares. more plz!
Photobucket

Well. Those went over well. Next up is some cheesy goodness.
CHEDDAR CHEESE STICKS: Whole wheat flour, baking powder, vegetable oil & low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
Photobucket

Ok, check out the melty cheezie awesomeness of these treats. These almost look good enough for me to eat. (Oh, and I COULD TOO. that's the best part of all natural treats)

The verdict?
Photobucket

TROPHY PUT THE PRETZELS BACK RIGHT NOW!!
Photobucket

Yeah, they love them.
Photobucket

Oh! And Zeus loves them too. He didn't even wait for me to open the bags.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Luckily he's a bit easier on my fingers. I wasn't sure about the compatibility of carob with a kitty's digestive tract, so i didn't let him have any of the "who shot JR's", but he loved the cheese sticks.
Photobucket

The low down:
Nibbles Treats is built around one idea: providing yummy organic treats for dogs where healthy trumps all other factors. I liked how the treats are named after actual dogs, it's a nice break from dog food boutiques whose names are so annoyingly over thought (really, there's no prize for fitting "paw" into every one of your 200 treat varieties. :-P) and of course, knowing that these treats are all natural is a comforting thought - won't the boys hate it if i try to share their treats?

Not to mention that the customer service is delightful. :)

Further testing will need to be done, but i think the cheese sticks were the favorite. How could any-pup say no to all this cheese?
Photobucket

In conclusion, you should all check out these delish treats. I know we'll be ordering again!
